Student Mentoring

Students, do you often feel unmotivated and low on self-esteem? Parents, are you concerned about the social and emotional well-being of your child? If so, consider signing up for a mentor. When working one on-one with a student, mentors build a relationship with the student and provides them with supplemental enrichment activities to build their academic self-esteem, motivation, and beliefs about their ability to enable them to achieve academically. Mentoring can be effective in increasing academic engagement and may also have positive impact on social and emotional development of the student. Summer Learning

As a parent, are you concerned that your child will forget over the summer most of the things he/she learned this past school year? Summer learning loss, summer setback, or summer slide are terms used to describe how on average, a student’s achievement scores may decline over summer vacation by one month’s worth of school-year learning. The declines were sharper for math than for reading, and the extent of loss was larger at higher grade levels. To combat this, there are activities to promote learning during the summer months such as reading programs, school-based summer school programs, online educational exercises, and home-based summer programs and community-based summer programs. These resources will offer ideas on how to combat summer learning loss.
